What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are durable, screw-like posts surgically placed into your jawbone. Over time, the implant fuses with the bone, forming a stable foundation for custom-made dental crowns that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.

Implants can replace a single missing tooth or an entire set. Unlike dentures, they remain securely in place while you smile, speak, and eat—without the risk of slipping.

Most implants are made from titanium, a biocompatible material known for its strength and lightweight properties.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are often recommended after tooth loss due to infection, decay, or failed procedures such as root canals or apicoectomies. In many cases, replacing the tooth with an implant provides a more reliable long-term solution than trying to preserve a compromised tooth.

Implants are also a permanent alternative to removable dentures. Options like All-on-4 can replace a full upper or lower arch of teeth.

Ideal candidates are in good general and oral health, with healthy gums and sufficient bone in the jaw to support the implant. However, certain conditions can affect eligibility:

  • Heavy smoking, gum disease, or heart conditions may compromise healing.

  • Radiation therapy to the head or neck, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes can interfere with the bone fusion process (osseointegration).

  • Medications for heartburn or depression may affect bone density.

If bone loss has occurred, a bone graft may be recommended. This procedure typically requires 3–4 months of healing before implant placement.

How Soon After Tooth Extraction Can You Get an Implant?

Typically, implants are placed 4–6 months after a tooth extraction, allowing time for the bone to heal and strengthen. Delaying beyond this window may lead to bone loss or shifting of nearby teeth.

What to Expect During the Dental Implant Procedure

There are two main types of implants:

  • Endosteal implants – placed directly into the jawbone.

  • Subperiosteal implants – placed under the gum but above the jawbone, used when bone quality is insufficient.

If your jawbone is too soft or thin, a bone graft may be necessary before implant placement.

The procedure usually begins with local anesthesia. A titanium or zirconia post is then placed into the jawbone. This acts as the new tooth root. After surgery, a healing cap is applied, and the implant integrates with the bone over 4–6 months.

Once osseointegration is complete, an abutment (connector) is attached to the implant. Your dentist will then take impressions to craft a natural-looking crown or bridge that blends seamlessly with your smile.

For patients missing all teeth, immediate loading (placing teeth within 48 hours) is an option, though standard healing is often preferred for individual implants.

What Is Recovery Like?

Without bone grafting, implant placement is comparable to getting a filling. Most patients return to daily activities the same day.

Recovery involves protecting the implant during healing. Your dentist may advise a soft or liquid diet and avoiding hard foods for several weeks. If the implant is beneath the gum line, normal eating may resume within 1–2 weeks.

Maintain excellent oral hygiene but avoid sonic toothbrushes during healing.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

With proper care, dental implants can last 25 years or more. Avoid smoking, chewing hard substances, and limit staining beverages like coffee or red wine.

While implants are highly durable, occasional maintenance may be needed. Loose screws can be tightened, and crowns can be polished or replaced if chipped or discoloured.

If any part comes loose, contact your dentist promptly. Avoid DIY fixes to ensure long-term success.
